Reflections from 2024

As this year draws to a close I have been reflecting on the impact healthcare concerns within a family have on both the individual and the family unit as a whole.

My own family have experienced both physical and mental health concerns across all three generations this year;

Chronic long term conditions, unexpected acute illness, accidental injury and rehabilitation from elective surgery.

Of course as a healthcare professional I am no stranger to any of these scenarios but it does no harm to to be reminded of the frustrations associated with loss of independence, whether this is short or long term, the anxiety that comes with uncertainty and of course the gratitude when everyone pulls together.

I am a firm believer of the fact that we are blessed to have the NHS in this country and as a family we have benefited hugely from the kindness and expertise that has been made available to us.

But I am also mindful that not everyone has family support and not everyone’s experience of the NHS is positive.

I speak to both the cared for and their carers on a near daily basis. Each has their own story and experience to share with me. Each one is unique, deeply personal and deserving of understanding and compassion.

If you require advice about the care and support that you need or find yourself in a caring role that is fast becoming over whelming, please do get in touch. I would welcome the opportunity to assist you.
